Guest urban critic of City Maker Congress 2023 Mark Cridge proposes to consider the city a National Park. He has already succeeded in London and the editors of Architecture City like the idea for Rotterdam. What if we regard Rotterdam as a precious, communal, natural domain? What would it mean if all Rotterdammers rediscovered their connection with nature and felt themselves to be inhabitants of a National Park?
Architecture City episode 13 explores this idea of Rotterdam as a natural commons. About the city as a nature preserve, we speak with Shelley Long. She is a landscape architect and Canadian by birth but decided to join West 8 in the Netherlands, attracted by the systemic approach to landscape and the environment she finds here. What opportunities does she see for Rotterdam as a National Park with the Maas as its main artery?
We also speak with Karel Slot one of the first residents of CW7, Centraal Wonen Zevenkamp. This still successful initiative for collective living in Rotterdam Zevenkamp shows what it means to construct a living environment on the basis of cooperation, shared ideals and democratic decision-making processes, and how green and nature are a natural part of that.
We speak with Mark Cridge about the National Park model and the way in which ecology and democracy coincide in it in a wonderfully natural way. How, in his current role and also as an advisor to DemocracyNext and former chief executive of mySociety, does Marc Cridge view the role of citizens in this model? And how can the interests of plants, animals, and people be represented and considered in new ways?

In Londen is hem dat al gelukt en de redactie van Architecture City ziet het voor Rotterdam ook wel voor zich. Wat als we Rotterdam gaan zien als een gekoesterd gemeenschappelijk, natuurlijk domein? En wat betekent het als alle Rotterdammers hun verbinding met de natuur hervinden en zichzelf gaan zien als bewoners van een Nationaal Park.

Zij is landschapsarchitect en Canadese van origine maar besloot bij West 8 in Nederland te gaan werken, aangetrokken door de systemische benadering van landschap en leefomgeving die ze hier vindt.
